Fantastic Noodle Cups "Pimp My Kettle"

The Cup Noodle market is keenly contested by a few major players – one of which is Fantastic. Whilst Fantastic is a strong player, the category is very susceptible to price promotion. Their campaign objectives were to drive sales and, in doing so, create a stronger franchise for the Fantastic brand to make it less vulnerable to price promotional activity by competitor brands. The key strategic leap was a decision to shift the target to Fantastic’s end consumer (Generation Y males) rather than Female Main Grocery Buyers (who for the most part, buy the product). After spending some time talking to their target audience, they told them that life is too much fun to take everything seriously – especially cup noodles. They decided that the best approach to this campaign was, to use the technical term, “take the piss”. They developed a campaign called ‘Pimp My Kettle’. This was a parody of the MTV programme ‘Pimp My Ride’, but instead of cars, it was kettles. The campaign had many touch points including interstitials and in programme content on MTV, a website, radio, outdoor, magazine, street press, PR and a sampling programme featuring a pimped up van that toured Australia. The website featured kettles that had been ‘pimped’ by well known cult artists, such as Ben Frost and celebrities, such as Harry Kewell. As part of their MTV negotiations, an event was held at the MTV Gallery, Sydney. On the night, they held an auction of the pimped celebrity kettles to raise funds for the Youth Off the Streets charity. Our celebrity ‘pimpers’ and some lucky consumers attended the event which was a PR success. During the campaign, they also ran 2 national sales promotions featuring ‘pimped’ up prizes. There were over 40,000 unique visits to the Pimp My Kettle interactive website. Tracking research showed strong lifts in awareness, brand preference, intent to purchase and best tasting noodles scores and nearly half of their target audience said they had seen the campaign. Most importantly, sales throughout the campaign period were up by 34%. Bronze Cannes Lions Media Winner.

Four'N Twenty Meat Pies "Magic Salad Plate"

Pies face the pressure of healthy eating. After having a long history of success as the unpretentious, honest and satisfying lunch for guys, Four’N Twenty, the iconic Australian meat pie brand was beginning to struggle for something to ignite existing and new customer interest. It now suffered from being considered an unhealthy meal choice. Sure guys still loved Four’N Twenty pies, but often they couldn’t commit themselves to eating one because of constant pressure by society to now be more responsible with their diets. All this pressure also frustrated them. They had to find a new way to give them permission to enjoy the pies. Pie eaters feel free to eat pies again. Building on Four’N Twenty’s history of being an unpretentious Australian brand, the Magic Salad Plate made light of health pressure, showing they understood their customer’s frustrations. It was a true innovation in the category, entertaining but also challenging social trends that celebrate the notion of the “health nut”. The plate price covered all manufacturing costs and it worked with a double impact, first encouraging people to buy pies initially to get their plate, then driving people to buy more pies to use it. Soon they were at workplaces around the country, generating publicity - driving more customers to buy more pies. The Four’N Twenty Magic Salad Plate. Instead of denying Four’N Twenty’s lack of health, they embraced it. They created a solution that worked with the pie to humorously say, “For five minutes society, can you bugger off and let me eat what I want!” – The Four’N Twenty Magic Salad Plate. An innovation that lets pie-eaters ridiculously appear to be also having some salad, when in truth it’s just part of the plate. Advertised across many mediums customers were driven online to buy plates using unique codes collected from packs. The goal being to lift Four’N Twenty single serve pie sales by 10%. Pies and Plates sell like crazy. The most successful marketing campaign by Four’N Twenty ever. The brand was immediately rewarded with huge free publicity for being “true to itself”. The brand and the plate became a symbol for letting guys just enjoy food. In the first fortnight, plate sales were reported at 25,000 and it was recently voted one of the best new products of 2008. It even appeared on eBay for 15 times its original value. Most importantly, Four’N Twenty pie sales soared with a 40% increase in single serves and 21% in four packs. Kraft Foods "Heated Bus Shelter"

The 10 heated shelters, primarily in downtown Chicago locations like Michigan Avenue and State Street, will have posters that read: “Cold, provided by winter. Warmth, provided by Stove Top.” The posters will also appear on 40 other bus shelters that will not have heated roofs. Kraft is arranging for the company that builds and maintains the bus shelters, JCDecaux North America, to heat them, trying to bring to life the warm feeling that consumers get when they eat stuffing, according to Kraft. Such “experiential marketing” is intended to entice consumers to experience products or brands tangibly rather than bombard them with pitches.

Quaker Oats "Food list"

Quaker Oats is a whole grain food, low in saturated fat and cholestorol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. The campaign target audience are housewives that shop and prepare their family meals. In Indonesia, the promotion tools closest to them are flyers and brochures containing pictures of products with their respective prices, commonly distributed by supermarkets and mini markets. These mailers are sent to neighborhoods and placed in mail boxes or clipped fences. The strategy is to use the conventional format of flyers to present information about cholestorol levels of various food normally found in a shopping list. The amounts of cholestorol content (presented in mg/100g of food serving) are camouflaged as food prices. A number of people are still unaware of the dangers of bad cholestorol accumulation in our bloodstream. Hence, this campaign is aimed at educating consumers about the cholestorol in various foods, and at the same time, promotion consumption of Quaker Oats to help lower cholestorol levels. At first, the housewives thought the mailers were the regular flyers from their mini market. As they read further, they were surprised to learn about the prices actually representing cholestorol content in various foods. They are now much more aware of wich foods are heart-healthy and wich are not and that might influence their food preferences in the future.

Tabasco "Hot stops"

Their brief was to raise awareness of Tabasco as the generic hot sause. Research showed that most of their target audience relies on public transport. Their solution was to create a winter-based ambient campaign designed specifically for the commuter market and combined with the USP of Tabasco's legendary heat. They indentified key commuter locations and then they created a serie of heated bus shelters featuring Tabasco branding and powered by small generators built into the back of each bus shelter. By making Tabasco an integral part of consumer experience and providing a free and useful service, not only did they communicate Tabasco's direct benefit of heat, but they also created an immediately positive association with the brand. In addition to commuters, hundreds of drivers going past were also exposed to the work. Responce measures showed 91% brand recollection amongst people who had just seen the bus-shelters and they featured in the local press. As part of a wider campaign, and together with a competitive price drop, the piece helped to raise quarterly sales of the standard 60ml Tabasco bottle by 13%.

Kids grow up with Complan.

While adults often try to look and feel younger, kids try to look bigger than they actually are. Shadows fascinate kids. In the background of this knowledge, they carried out a rather simple activity in the vicinity of schools, parks and shopping malls. A mall was covered with a backdrop that had a height measuring scale and Complan branding. In front of this backdrop, at a distance of approx. 7 feet, a source of light was placed on the ground level. Now when kids came to check their height they could also see their shadow bein formed on the Complan backdrop. Due to ground level light, as the kid would move towards the source of the light, the shadow on the backdrop keeps growing bigger and bigger. This created excitement amongst kids and parents, and re-emphasized the core brand message "Complan: Extra growing power" The spot became an attraction for every kid in the locality. Charmed by the shadow formation, kids wouls come (accompanied by their parents) and spend hours playing in front of the Complan backdrop, and scoring over each other on the height scale.

Onsala "Now ready-sliced"

After more than 50 years on the market, Onsala is the best known brand of sandwich sausage in Sweden. Trough the years, the package and logo design have been more or less the same, making it easily recognizable on the supermarkets shelves. Now, the Onsala-sausage has been inproved. It comes ready-sliced, and in a special, new package. No more need for sharp knives - even the childeren can make their own sandwiches, without the risk of losing a finger or two. The new sausage is exactly the same as the old one. The only difference is that it now is available as ready-sliced. Since the specific design of the Onsala-Sausage is so well known, they show the famous old package in the advertising- instead of the new. The only difference is that the billboards, posters, ads, trolleys, buses ect showing the old sausage, is sliced. During the weeks of the campaign, the "sliced" advertising became the talk of the town. The ads fluttered in the wind on billboards, buses, subways and shopping-trolleys, and were frequently mentioned in press articles and on radio-shows. The sales for the ready-sliced sausage was 140% higher than projected. Gold Eurobest Winner 2007.

Koo Strawberry Jam.

What goes great with bread? Koo Strawberry Jam. They needed to find a new way to communicate this to consumers at point-of-purchase. Research identified that consumers are most likely to buy a spread for their bread when they are in-store. They touch the fresh, soft bread and imagine how good it’s going to taste with loads of butter and jam. They brought that thought to life by using the bread tag that was previously colourless and boring. By turning it into a slice of bread, spread thick with Koo Strawberry Jam, and adding the Koo brand logo on the back. Consumers were prompted to make their jam purchase there and then. They also took their bread tags home with them, which served as a further reminder of of Koo Jams.
